I have been a web developer for over 10 years. In that time I've seen a lot of things change. I've had a lot of hosts for myself and my clients over the years. Some good, some not so good and some were just a complete scam. In my experience few have done better than InMotion Hosting (www.inmotionhosting.com) and few have done WORSE than Lunarpages (aka: Add2net). This company has the worst customer service and the worst reliability, in my experience, of any host I've ever had the displeasure of using.

How Lunarpages Screwed me...

I signed up with Lunarpages in 2005 after my previous host (a friend with a server and a T1 line, bad idea!) decided he didn't want to do it anymore and quit one day without any warning. I had very little time to do any research and Lunarpages looked like a good company. At the time they actually were. That changed after about a year. Just after they renewed my site for another year I started noticing massive downtime on my site. Lunarpages insisted there was nothing wrong and the problem must be on my end. They must have forgotten that I wasn't born yesterday and that I knew about Megaproxy. You can check your website from their end to see how it looks to the rest of the world. Great tool for developers and for busting your host when they try to blame you for their problems. It took almost 6 months for them to get that straightened out. Just in time for the renewal to come up again. For some dumb reason , I did...

For some time there was a security problem on the Lunarpages servers that let anyone who wanted to to come in and hack your site. It was a big problem there for over a year. I was hacked a few times. Each time they insisted that it was not their issue. I must have screwed something up. 'Old scripts' I think was Lunarpages excuse. The problem is one of the sites was straight html. No scripts at all! I found proof that dozens of only Lunarpages accounts were all hacked by the same person. The odds of that are astronomical by the way. When I gave them the proof suddenly they said 'we'll take a look at it'. Then it all stopped. Obviously they found the hole and plugged it. Wish they would have bothered to look for it a year earlier....

The last time I had a site hacked they actually just cancelled that account for 'illegal content'. Of course it was illegal content, the site was hacked you morons. It was their lousy security that let my site get hacked. That was beside the point. 'I did not take adequate precautions and therefore violated the terms of service'. The site was immediately removed from their servers with no opportunity to fix it. That was the day (spring 2009) I found InMotion Hosting and started to realize just how BAD Lunarpages really was. They did refund my money back to me and all was well, I thought....

At this point I still had one account with Lunarpages that I was having trouble finding a new host for. My site is PG-13 but that puts it in the "Adult Hosting" category so you need a special host for that. Oh yeah, you never want to be on an 'adult host' unless your content requires it. Lunarpages in labeled as an Adult Host. It can get your site mislabeled and even blacklisted in some cases. Your email could be blocked on some networks or just treated as spam by others. Anyways, my site sells lingerie. This is a highly seasonal business and every Halloween and Valentine's sales go WAY up. The rest of the year it's pretty flat. Needless to say if anything interferes with that time of the year I loose a lot of money. Mid October 2009, my site is using too many resources and they suspend it without notice or any warning. After sitting on hold forever trying to get anyone at Lunarpages to explain what just happened they tell me I can get the site back up right away if I agree to pay $90 more a month. My site was using a very popular shopping cart script and it's well supported. I checked with them, gave them the bandwidth and hits numbers and they laughed and said there is no way I was using too many resources. I tried to get a hold or Lunarpages but their customer service is a joke. You send a trouble ticket to support and sometime in the next 24 to 48 hours someone will get back to you. Call and they say your tech is busy and it's best to wait for their reply by email. When they do respond it's usually wrong and you have to wait ANOTHER day or two for them to get back to you. I lost a lot of sales that week. I wish I had moved to a new host then... but I didn't. My fault but I had a lot going on and it takes about a week to get everything all worked out when you move a site like this. I could not afford to be down at that point any longer. I'll move in March, I thought..... NOT! Besides, they assured me that it would not happen again and I would be informed well before any action was ever taken if they noticed an server load issues. Yeah right.....

A week before Valentine's 2010 I got a BIG surprise. They did it again. No notice, no warning as I had been promised. I got a response well after the fact that they had to take 'emergency actions' to protect their other customers from my 'evil website'. The one that is using a standard shopping cart script and only getting about 10% more hits at that point than normal. Some how if I paid them $90 more a month they'd be happy to put my site back up right away with just 3 shopping days left until Valentine's Day. I don't know about you but that sure feels a lot like extortion to me. This time I learned my lesson, I split. I talked to a few people I know using they same shopping cart and heard that HostGator (www.Hostgator.com)  was a good host for 'Adult' sites. I checked it out, did my research and emailed their sales department a few test questions. They got back to my right away and were very professional. I signed up right then and there. It took about 4 solid days but I was up and running again. I lost all my Valentine's Day business but I had the piece of mind knowing my site was not going anywhere.

I let Lunarpages know I no longer needed their service and not to bother trying to fix my account. 4 days later I got a response that it did not matter, since my site (that did not exist on their server anymore) was showing such an improvement in server load they were reinstating the account and I was not eligible for a refund and could not even cancel my account. It would run until Oct 29th, 2010 whether I had anything on it or not. That's where this site comes in. I am hosting this site on Lunarpages as a way of saying thanks for all the great years together and all the professional service I received over the past 6 month.

If you have had such an experience with Lunarpages please think about posting it here so the whole world can know just how happy we all are with them.

If you are wondering, this is not hate speech. I am not stating anything that isn't true and this is all just my opinion. I do not wish personal harm to anyone at Lunarpages, even the little weasel I talked to this morning. I just want to make sure everyone knows what they are getting into when they sign up with Lunarpages. Knowledge is power, right?

Still Don't believe me? Just Google 'Lunarpages' and you'll get thousands of results for people who are pissed off at them.

Disclaimer: This site is hosted on Lunarpages servers solely because they refused to cancel my account and issue me a refund after they screwed me. It will be hosted on their servers until Oct 29th, 2010. I no longer have any accounts at InMotion Hosting. I do not get any money or services from them at all. All my accounts are at Hostgator right now where I have a Reseller account. I do not get any special deal from them for saying nice things about them either. This info is provided as a personal experience and not in anyway intended as a guarantee of your experience with any of these hosts. Buyer beware, always!
